Finding Your SHAPE
First Baptist Church has a threefold mission:
Like most churches, we fulfill our mission through a number of ministries, programs, committees, and teams on which our members serve. But how do we decide which members should serve where? Sometimes people serve because there is a desperate need or because they feel guilty, which is neither ideal nor intended. Ideally, we want our members to serve according to their strengths and gifts. But how do we know what those are?
Rick Warren of Saddleback Church in California put together a tool called SHAPE that is designed to help churches and Christians answer that very question. In these pages, we have taken that tool and modified it to fit First Baptist Church. We pray it will be useful to you as you learn how God has created you to serve Him and the world He has created.
What Is SHAPE?
Spiritual Gifts: special abilities given to every Christian to accomplish God’s work
Hearts Desires: your interests and passions that motivate you to meaningful ministry
Abilities: talents and skills you can use to serve God
Personality: your natural approach to life and relationships
Experiences: events in your life that have shaped who you are
God uses everything about you to make you into the person He wants to use to accomplish His purposes here in Thomson and beyond. The SHAPE tool tries to help you put what you know about yourself into a format that might be easier for you to apply to real-world opportunities.
What we have done is compile and summarize the SHAPE tool along with other similar and helpful resources. It's a big document--not for the faint of heart--but if you're serious about learning about your spiritual gifts and wondering how your unique life experiences fit into how God is shaping you to serve Him and follow Jesus, this might be helpful.
We have one request: would you let our church know your results?
