What was the Philistines' biggest mistake here? I'd say it was not their treatment of Samson (careless though that was) but their confidence in their god. Samson wasn't in their custody because of Dagon. Dagon doesn't exist! Samson was there because (1) he had sinned, and this was his punishment from God, and (2) the Philistines had sinned, and this was their punishment from God.

No sane military leader would do this, so the Israelites could only go forward with this plan if they actually trusted God.
