FaithMarks for April 26, 2025: The Day John Calvin Died

Today in 1564, John Calvin passed away in Geneva, Switzerland. His life and theology continue to shape how many Christians think about Scripture, salvation, and the sovereignty of God. Here's why that matters:

Though John Calvin’s name has become synonymous with Reformed theology, he wasn’t a flashy reformer. He was a pastor, a writer, and a Bible teacher. His life’s work? Helping people know God through His Word and live in light of the Gospel.

He wrote one of the most influential Christian books in history: Institutes of the Christian Religion, not just a theology for scholars—but for all Christians. He wanted believers to understand who God is and how He saves.

Calvin preached daily, taught pastors, and helped reform the Church in Geneva. He emphasized: The authority of Scripture, The sovereignty of God, and Salvation by grace alone through faith alone.

Calvin wasn’t perfect. He had blind spots, believing in a close tie between church and state, and under his watch, Geneva enforced religious conformity—sometimes harshly. The most infamous example is the execution of Michael Servetus in 1553, a heretic by Reformation standards. Calvin didn't order the execution, but he approved of it.

He also struggled in his early ministry with conflict and control, once being banished from Geneva for trying to reform too quickly. Yet even with missteps, Calvin grew. He returned humbler, more pastoral, and spent the rest of his life preaching Christ and shepherding the church. He once wrote, “I gave myself up to be consumed in the work.”

When he died on April 26, 1564, he didn’t want attention. No public grave. No statue. He asked to be buried in an unmarked grave—to give all glory to God.

Today, we remember not just Calvin the theologian—but Calvin the servant. A man who spent his life pointing others to Christ, not to himself.

“My heart I offer to you, O Lord, promptly and sincerely.” – Calvin’s motto

Whether you agree with all of Calvin’s theology or not, there’s something here for all of us:

  • Root your life in Scripture

  • Live humbly

  • Serve faithfully

  • Finish well
