Devotion - The Importance of Prayer

I once read prayer is the most important tool for all mankind. Indeed, daily prayer in the life of a Christian is crucial. Students across the country will gather next week for See You At The Pole. This is a time youth corporately come together to publicly display their faith to our Lord and Savior. On Wednesday Sept. 24th at 7am, Thomson youth will gather together at flagpoles to worship and pray. I urge everyone to take time to pray for Christian students as they take a public stand for their faith in a world that is quickly becoming hostile against such displays.

The theme verse for this year is Ephesians 6:18, “And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for the Lord’s people.” Notice how many times the word “all” is used in the previous verse in explaining when, how, and for whom we should pray. May we be obedient and not neglect this open line of communication to the Lord. Prayer should permeate our lives. - Ben Tarver

9/11 and the World Around Us

There will never be a time to forget what happened on 9/11/2001. There will never be a time to forget the Oklahoma City bombing. There will never be a time to forget the wars of our age, the genocide that takes place right now around the world, the senseless acts of violence that litter our news, or the millions of people who have been taken from us as a result. But there will also never be a time for those tragedies to drive Christians to live in fear and doubt.

Jesus said, "I have told you these things so that in Me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble, but take heart! I have overcome the world." (John 16:33)

What things had He told us? In the rest of chapter 16, Jesus had told His disciples that they would endure the worst doubt-causing and fear-creating event in history: the death of the Savior. But on the other side of His death would be life and hope and the Holy Spirit, and through those things they would overcome the worst of the world by the best of Jesus Christ.

Fear and doubt are real challenges today, even for Christians. But remember that Jesus has overcome the only thing that ever really threatened us: separation from God. Now, nothing can separate us from the love of God in Jesus - not life or death or angels or demons or the present or the future or any power on this earth. Take heart, my friends. Christ has overcome it all.

Do you need some encouragement? Come be with us on Sunday morning. - Matt Ward

Thinking about Inviting Folks to Church

When we ask people how they first came to First Baptist Church do you know what they tell us?
  • It’s not direct mail or Facebook.
  • It’s not the yellow pages or our website.
  • It’s not because of the awesome pastor (I guess I need to preach on humility soon).
  • The #1 way people end up a part of First Baptist Church is because someone invited them.
Here are three reasons you should invite someone to FBC Thomson:
  1. They might make a friend.
Some of my best friends in the world are at FBC! Friendship is one of life’s great  treasures, and church is a great place to make friends. How cool would it be if you invited someone to church and they made a lifelong friend! Do you know anyone that needs a friend? Invite them to church.
  2. They might be encouraged.
They say only 20% of an iceberg is visible above the water. The rest is below the surface. I think people’s struggles are like that, too. You never really know what they are going through. They might look happy on the outside, but they are really in need of hope or encouragement. A simple invitation to church might be a spark of hope for someone. Do you know anyone that needs encouragement? Invite them to church.
  3. They might meet Jesus.
In the book of Acts, you can read about a guy named Andrew who brought his brother to meet  Jesus. Andrew’s brother was Peter, who turned out to be a great Apostle. (You’ve probably heard of him. He’s got massive churches named after him!). By far, the best reason to invite someone to church is they might  meet Jesus. Eternity can be altered because of a simple invitation.
So what do you say? Who can you invite to First Baptist Church this week?

David Lambert, Lead Pastor

P.S. If you bring someone, please introduce them to me. I’d love to say hi.
